To: Prime Minister of Israel
To Mr. Ehud Olmert
Prime Minister of Israel
October 3, 2006
Dear Sir,
In 1970 Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser initiated peace talks with Israel, via Nahum Goldman, president of the World Jewish Congress. Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir turned her back on these talks and vetoed Goldman's trip to Cairo. The direct outcome of Golda Meir's refusal was, on the one hand, a deep moral disillusionment among a generation of Israelis brought up to believe in Israel's genuine desire for peace, and, on the other hand, the realization among Arab leaders that war was the only way to bring Israel to the negotiating table.
The October 1973 war, which broke out this week 33 years ago and claimed thousands of dead and wounded on both sides, will for all eternity be on the head of Golda Meir and her arrogant policy of refusal.
In recent weeks Syrian President Bashar Al Assad has repeatedly indicated his willingness to negotiate a peace with Israel. 36 years after Golda Meir's fatal refusal to negotiate with Egypt, you too, Ehud Olmert, have chosen to reject negotiations with Syria and to shut the door on peace that President Assad has tentatively opened.
Your policy of refusal can only lead to a war more terrible than all we have ever known. The responsibility for this war and its severe outcome will be on your head.
It is not too late to stop the next war with Syria. It is never the wrong time for peace.
Ehud Olmert, this is your opportunity to rise to the occasion and to make a historical contribution to the security of the State of Israel and the future of its citizens.
We the undersigned call upon you to bravely accept the challenge put forth by President Assad and to invite him without further procrastination to Jerusalem, to talk peace.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
